No Breaks in the Wall



E’ lungo per ora 480 km, che dovranno diventare 703, e sparso un po’ ovunque in Cisgiordania, soprattutto intorno alle città più grandi e di confine. E’ alto dai 6 ai 9 metri, fatto per il 10% di lastre di cemento armato. E’ un muro. I palestinesi lo chiamano più precisamente “High Wall”, per differenziarlo forse dai muri con cui ognuno di noi ha normalmente a che fare, quelli di casa sua, quelli del suo cortile. Questo invece è diverso: è un muro di segregazione. Separa un popolo da un altro, alcune persone dalle altre, membri della stessa famiglia, lavoratori dai loro luoghi di lavoro, terreni più ricchi da quelli infruttuosi. E’ costato 4 milioni di euro a chilometro, ha abbattuto 240.000 alberi di olivo e lasciato senza casa 50.000 palestinesi. Altri 128.000 sono circondati dal cemento su tre lati e controllati sul quarto da telecamere e torrette di osservazione. Ma il muro costruito dagli israeliani non è solo fisico. I palestinesi stanno perdendo la speranza, stanno perdendo la forza di lottare per i propri diritti perché si sentono abbandonati dai loro politici, dalla comunità internazionale. Il clima di ostilità, il continuo stress e l’instabilità che si respira nell’aria hanno eretto un muro anche nell’animo delle persone e nei rapporti tra loro.

La memoria è corta e la storia non è una buona insegnante.
